Plumbing FAQs

A toilet that repeatedly clogs may have a partial blockage in the toilet trap, drain piping, or sewer line. Low-flush performance, excessive material, or plumbing vent problems can also contribute. If you are constantly reaching for the plunger, it is worth having a plumber identify the underlying cause.

A constantly running toilet is commonly caused by a worn flapper, fill valve, float, or another component inside the tank. Even a small toilet leak can waste a significant amount of water over time, so a toilet that continues running should be repaired.

Water around the base of a toilet can indicate a failed seal, loose connection, or another plumbing problem. Because water can damage flooring and the structure underneath the toilet, avoid continuing to use it if water is actively escaping onto the floor.

Low water pressure can be caused by an issue with a fixture, partially closed valve, pressure regulator, mineral buildup, plumbing leak, supply piping, or even the municipal water supply. If low pressure affects your entire home rather than one faucet or shower, professional diagnosis can help locate the problem.

Water heater leaks can come from valves, pipe connections, the temperature and pressure relief valve, drain valve, or the tank itself. Some leaks can be repaired, but a leaking storage tank often means the water heater needs to be replaced. Significant leaks should be addressed quickly to limit water damage.

Water heater lifespan depends on the type of equipment, water quality, installation, maintenance, and how heavily the system is used. If your water heater is older and experiencing leaks, rust-colored water, insufficient hot water, or repeated repair problems, it may be time to consider replacement.

Traditional water heaters store a supply of heated water, while tankless systems heat water as it is needed. Tankless systems can save space and offer other advantages, but installation requirements, household hot-water demand, existing utilities, and upfront cost should all be considered before choosing.

Popping and rumbling noises are often associated with sediment buildup inside a tank-style water heater. Other sounds can be related to heating elements, pressure changes, or equipment problems. If your water heater becomes unusually noisy, a plumbing inspection can determine whether maintenance or repair is needed.

Shut off your home’s main water supply as quickly as possible to limit flooding and water damage. If it is safe to do so, turn off electricity in areas where water is near electrical equipment. Once the water is controlled, contact a plumber to locate and repair the damaged pipe.

Common warning signs include multiple drains backing up at the same time, frequent clogs, sewer odors, gurgling drains, or wastewater appearing in tubs or floor drains. When several fixtures are affected, the problem may be deeper in your plumbing system or main sewer line rather than an individual drain.
